“Ōgiya Koisato Oiran”
HORIGEN × bAbycAt Collaborative Second Artwork
The “Oiran” series is inspired by the concept of fictional bijinga (portraits of beautiful women) created by an imaginary artist from a fictional pleasure district. Set in an imagined world, this series portrays oiran and courtesans who each carry their own stories, radiating strength, elegance, and distinct personalities.
Every day, she cried.
She cursed the fate she could not change and felt powerless against the life she had been given.
But after shedding countless tears, when there were no more left to cry, she finally realized the truth.
This was where she had to survive.
The only thing she could rely on was herself.
“I will become the greatest oiran in this city.”
With that vow, she carried the koi upon her back.
There was no turning back.
The only path left was to rise to the top.

This artwork is a collaboration with the legendary tattoo artist, (HORIGEN). The koi tattoo on Koisato Oiran’s back was originally hand-drawn by HORIGEN. His traditional tattoo artwork was then fused with my digital artwork, creating a unique collaboration between hand-drawn tattoo art and contemporary digital illustration.
This is the second collaborative artwork with HORIGEN, following the first piece, “Dragon and Hawk.”
Koisato Oiran, who is determined to rise through the world of the oiran, chose to have a koi tattoo carved onto her back. Her pure white skin beautifully enhances the vivid colors of the koi, allowing the tattoo to stand out even more.
※In Japan, koi tattoos symbolize growth, transformation, and vitality. They are also considered symbols of perseverance, loyalty, and good fortune. The powerful image of koi swimming against the current is deeply admired. Inspired by the Chinese legend of the koi that climbs the Dragon Gate and transforms into a dragon, koi are loved as a symbol of success, determination, and the pursuit of one’s goals.
