Who Is Benzaiten?
Benzaiten is the only female deity among Japan’s Seven Lucky Gods. She is widely revered as the goddess of music, arts, wisdom, eloquence, and prosperity.
Her origins can be traced back to Saraswati, the ancient Hindu goddess of rivers, knowledge, and the arts. As Buddhism spread across Asia, she was introduced to Japan, where her image gradually blended with local beliefs and traditions.
Benzaiten is often depicted playing a biwa, a traditional Japanese lute, symbolizing music, culture, and refined beauty. She is also accompanied by a white snake, her sacred messenger, which represents renewal, abundance, and good fortune.
Today, Benzaiten remains one of Japan’s most beloved deities, worshipped by those seeking success in the arts, wisdom, prosperity, and even beauty.
七福神の中で唯一の女性神「弁才天（弁財天）」は、
音楽・芸能・学問・財運を司る神様として、
日本で古くから親しまれています。
その起源は、古代インドの川の女神「サラスヴァティ」。
仏教とともに日本へ伝わり、
神仏習合によって神道にも受け入れられ、
水や農耕を司る神としても信仰されるようになりました。
弁才天といえば、美しい姿で琵琶を奏でる姿が有名です。
また、白蛇は弁才天の使いとされ、
古くから豊穣や再生の象徴として親しまれ、
やがて繁栄や財運をもたらす縁起の良い存在と考えられるようになりました。
江戸時代には七福神信仰が庶民の間で広まり、
弁財天は財運や商売繁盛、芸能上達を願う神様として
多くの人々に信仰されるようになります。
現在では、美しい音楽の神様としてだけでなく、
財運や芸能、美人祈願のご利益でも広く知られ、
多くの人々に親しまれています。
